We are pleased to introduce the new HibouAir Air Velocity Sensor (SSD014/2) developed by Smart Sensor Devices, a compact Bluetooth Low Energy sensor designed for airflow measurement, ventilation checks and long-term field monitoring.
The new sensor measures air velocity, temperature and relative humidity, giving HVAC professionals, facility teams and engineers a clearer picture of how air is moving and what conditions exist around the measurement point.
Unlike a simple handheld airflow meter intended mainly for spot checks, SSD014/2 can also remain installed and collect measurements over time. This makes it useful both for quick inspections and for monitoring projects where airflow behaviour needs to be understood over several hours, days or longer.
Understanding airflow beyond a single measurement
Airflow can change throughout the day as ventilation systems respond to occupancy, operating schedules, temperature changes and system settings. A measurement taken at one moment may therefore provide only part of the picture.
SSD014/2 includes built-in data logging, allowing air velocity, temperature and humidity to be recorded over time. The stored information can later be accessed through Bluetooth Low Energy and used to examine trends, compare different operating periods or support project documentation.
This can be particularly helpful when investigating inconsistent ventilation, verifying system performance or monitoring an airflow point before and after adjustments have been made.
Designed for ducts, vents and difficult measurement points
The sensor uses an external probe connected to the main unit by cable. This allows the probe to be positioned directly inside ducts, vents, airflow paths, equipment cabinets and other locations where placing the entire device would be impractical.
Keeping the sensing point separate from the main enclosure also gives installers more flexibility when deciding how and where to perform measurements.
The main sensor unit is housed in an IP67-rated enclosure, making it suitable for field installations and demanding environments around ventilation systems and technical equipment.
Useful for HVAC commissioning and ventilation work
One of the main applications for the new Air Velocity Sensor is HVAC commissioning and balancing.
During commissioning or maintenance work, technicians often need to confirm whether airflow is reaching the intended areas and whether ventilation systems are performing as expected. By measuring air velocity together with temperature and humidity, SSD014/2 provides additional environmental context around those measurements.
It can also be left at selected measurement points to observe how airflow changes after balancing work, system adjustments or operational changes.
For facility managers, the same approach can be used for recurring ventilation checks in offices, meeting rooms, shared spaces and other occupied areas where consistent airflow plays an important role in comfort and building performance.
Monitoring ducts and industrial ventilation
The external probe also makes the sensor suitable for monitoring inside ventilation ducts and other controlled airflow paths.
In industrial environments, it can be used around process ventilation, technical rooms, machine cabinets or equipment where air movement, temperature and moisture conditions may influence operation.
Instead of relying only on occasional manual measurements, teams can collect historical information and better understand how conditions change during normal operation.
Battery-powered and easy to deploy
SSD014/2 is battery powered, which means monitoring points can be established without installing additional power or communication wiring.
Bluetooth Low Energy provides wireless access to both live measurements and stored data through compatible applications and gateway workflows.
The sensor is designed for long deployments, with a replaceable CR123A battery and battery life of up to four years depending on operating conditions and configuration.
For many monitoring projects, this makes it possible to install the sensor, leave it collecting data and return later to retrieve the measurements without maintaining a permanent wired infrastructure.
A new tool for practical airflow monitoring
The HibouAir Air Velocity Sensor expands the range of monitoring applications that can be handled with compact Bluetooth sensors.
From HVAC balancing and commissioning to duct measurements, building performance investigations and industrial ventilation monitoring, SSD014/2 is designed for situations where understanding air movement over time is more useful than relying on a single measurement.
By combining air velocity with temperature and humidity, an external probe, built-in logging and wireless data access, the sensor provides a practical way to collect airflow information in real operating environments.
